Description du lieu patrimonial
The Earle Residence is a side gabled Craftsman bungalow with a front facing dormer and shingle cladding set on a heavily treed lot on the north side of West 57th. Avenue just west of West Boulevard in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Valeur patrimoniale
The Earle Residence holds historical and aesthetic value. It is significant for its long association with its builder Arthur L. Earle and his family, for its Craftsman style and its heavily treed lot.
Constructed in 1920, the Earle Residence is valued for its long association with the Earle family from the home's construction to the mid 2000s. Its builder, Nova Scotia born Arthur L. Earle arrived in Vancouver in the early 1900s and operated a painting and decorating business and built a few houses during the First World War. The house remained in the family after his death in 1943 with his widow, Myrtle, adapting the house into rental accommodation while maintaining a suite of rooms for herself. Additionally, the residence is valued for its association with Kaye Earle, Arthur and Myrtle's daughter, a prize-winning artist, art collector, designer, and long-standing community advocate.
Heritage value is found with the home's Craftsman style, a popular style originating in California and built throughout Vancouver from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It is characterized here with the shed dormer, open knee braces and shingle cladding.
