Finding myself with time to kill in Montreal, I went to seek out the Gas Station on Nuns Island designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies built several buildings in Canada, including the TD Bank towers in Toronto. But in 1969, in Verdun, he designed a filling station for Imperial Oil.

I left Gare Central via the rem, and got off at l’Île-des-Sœurs, and walked the 1.2km in light rain to the building, Since 2012 a community centre called La Station, after the filling station closed in 2008. A filing station seems like such a strange project for one of the greatest modernist architects, Who built the Seagram building in NYC, Designed the Barcelona Chair, and was the last director of the Bauhaus.

The futuristic filling station, now part of the community, flanked by an electric car, while i wait for a bus back to the REM.
